Russell Edward May was born May 5, 1921, in Abbot Creek, near Prestonsburg, Kentucky. He was only 68 when he passed away. He left behind an impressive memorial to the beauty and serenity of Kentucky, and his paintings and limited edition prints have been widely collected.
In 1973, Russell sold his sign-painting and advertising business in Prestonsburg, and took his wife's, Eva Bennington May, advice to devote his time and talents to art - a wise decision. Their previous wallpaper store was transformed, into an art gallery, where Russell's talent for painting mountain landscapes became well known.
