Charismatic - 1999 Kentucky Derby Winner
Charismatic won by a neck, much closer than jockey Chris Antley thought.
Trained by D. Wayne Lucas and a third-generation descendant of Secretariat, Charismatic was the closest challenger in taking the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. His odds for the Derby were 31:1. He took the Derby away from Menifee as well as the Preakness. However, the Belmont race changed things. As Lemon Drop Kid took the lead with 1/8 mile left, jockey Chris Antley sensed a problem. He dramatically jumps off Charismatic and holds his left front leg. It was broken in 2 places. While many believed Chris Antleys selfless act saved Charismatics life, the injury nevertheless ended his career in racing. His earnings were in excess of $2 million.
Today Charismatic stands stud at Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan.
